America Against America

Review

Wang is a high-raking official across three Chinese administrations and he wrote this book after visiting dozens of cities and universities in the United States in the late 1980s–1990s.

This book is widely described as the updated version of Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America, and I think this is an accurate description. Despite being written in 1991, it’s interesting how many of the trends that Wang writes about are still accelerating in 2021.

I first heard of this book from Palladium Magazine: The Triumph and Terror of Wang Huning
